Stu & Tippy's Travels

This Blog will be used to document the travels of Stuart and Tippy Reid as we travel this beautiful country in our motorhome. We will hopefully be able to share our experiences in words and pictures and allow our friends and family to enjoy them with us.

Arrived in Colorado

We had a wonderful drive on Friday from Las Vegas, NM to Colorado City, CO. The landscape in northern New Mexico was rolling grass lands and was very pleasant. We saw several small herds of antelope and many single ones as well. The road was great with just one short construction area where they were redoing a bridge just north of Las Vegas. We made a stop at a rest area about 26 miles from the border to walk Alex and take a short break for ourselves.

At the border we went over Raton Pass, about 7500 feet, without difficulty but with lovely mountain scenery. The landscape in southern Colorado was somewhat different than New Mexico and there were no Antelope to be seen. We fueled up about 20 miles from our destination and arrived at the Colorado City KOA just after 1:00 Mountain Time. This Mountain Time has Alex all messed up and she gets us up at 7:00am instead of her usual 8:00 - 8:30 time. Hopefully she will adjust as we are in the time zone a little longer.

Shortly after our arrival we had a rain shower with GIGANTIC drops of rain and then hail for a short period. I got a couple of pictures of the hail before it melted. We took a nap, after reading a bit, and then took a drive to a neighboring town, Rye, where Tippy found a church for Sunday. She will go to 8:00 Mass and then we will take off to Littleton, CO to visit my friend Jim Magette and hopefully hook up with my brother Doug who is in Colorado visiting his son Dillon.

The nights have been wonderfully cool, since we got to Las Vegas, so we have been able to open the windows in the evening and enjoy the smell of fresh air. It was 59 when we got up this morning and Tippy had to turn on the heat to get the chill off. We look forward to wearing sweatshirts in the morning and evening!

We had dinner at the RV park last night and it was great! I had a cheeseburger and fries and Tippy ate about half of a "Colorado City Green Chile Slopper." This concoction includes a large hamburger bun topped with a 1/3 pound hamburger patti, American cheese, and french fries. All of this is smothered in green chile and topped with shredded cheddar cheese. It looked great and tasted great and as I said Tippy was only able to eat about half of it.

Today we are going to a Mexican Cafe for lunch and dinner is undecided at this time. The park here is pretty full, partly due to a rally of the Colorado Cruisers. We have seen very few RV's on the road. Normally they seem to be everywhere but now they are the exception. The fuel prices are really affecting the RV industry. Our manufacturer, Alfa, closed their doors at the end of April and several others have as well. Some companies have merged, some have restructured, and, unfortunately, some more will be closing.

Well it is time for me to start relaxing with a book so I will sign off for now. More from Fort Collins on Tuesday. Be safe.
