Stu & Tippy's Travels

This Blog will be used to document the travels of Stuart and Tippy Reid as we travel this beautiful country in our motorhome. We will hopefully be able to share our experiences in words and pictures and allow our friends and family to enjoy them with us.

Point Sebago Resort in Casco, Maine

The rain stopped and we had a beautiful day today, Wednesday. I played golf at Point Sebago and had a good day on a lovely course. The course was pretty wet so there was almost no roll and the greens were a little bumpy due to recent airifying but otherwise, especially esthetics's, the course was great! I also took a couple of pictures of a gigantic sand castle that was on the beach at Point Sebago. The detail in the castle was truly amazing and the size was larger than life, for sand castles.

Tippy and I went to dinner tonight at a small restaurant down the road a piece on Long lake. We had a table overlooking the lake and had a great meal. Tomorrow we will shampoo the carpet in the coach and, if I am real energetic, I will wash the outside as well. On Friday we are off to Bar Harbor so more from there and in the meantime be safe.

Vermont to Maine

We had a very pretty drive on Saturday from Danville, VT to Casco, ME. We followed route 2 out of Vermont, across New Hampshire, and into Maine. The entire trip was less than 120 miles and the scenery was very nice. The same route later in the fall would be spectacular with the fall colors at their finest. We found a small rest area along the way where we stopped for lunch and to give Alex a walk. We arrived at the Point Sebago Golf and Beach Resort a little after 1:00. We got settled in our spot, picture above, and then went into the town of Windham to locate a church for Tippy and to stop at the local Walmart. I watched the golf event when we returned home and Tippy made meat loaf and mashed potatoes for dinner.

Sunday and Monday it rained most of the day, not a hard rain but more of an irregular drizzle. Tippy drove to Mass in the morning and we went and picked up a pizza after the golf was over - good job Tiger! I stopped by the golf course on Monday to confirm my Golf Digest visit on Wednesday. The course looks great and is rated #1 in Southern Maine by Golf Digest. I also plan on playing the Kebo Valley G.C. in Bar Harbor that is rated #1 in Maine.

Tippy has decided to drive into Bridgton, about 13 miles, to visit a Quick Care facility there. her back has been bothering her again and she thinks she may have a urinary infection. She was comfortable driving alone so I am staying home with Alex and trying to finish my current book. The navigation system in the new Honda CR-V is really good and Tippy feels very comfortable driving with "Sugar," the name given to the nav system, providing voiced directions.

We will stay here until Friday when we will head north to Bar Harbor, about 175 miles. A friend of mine from Las Vegas, David Gubler, owns a nine hole Donald Ross design course that is about 15 miles from Bar Harbor. David will be up there during the time we will be there so we will get together for some golf and fellowship. We also want to tour the Arcadia National Park while in the area. Our friends Walt & Jeri, we met them in Durango last summer, will be on a cruise ship that docks in Bar Harbor during the time we will be in the area. We are planning to have lunch with them and visit for a time while their ship is in port.

I will report back after my round of golf tomorrow, hopefully with some nice golf course pictures. It was 86 and humid when we arrived on Saturday. On Sunday the temperature was in the 60's and the same for Monday and Tuesday. It is supposed to warm up a bit tomorrow which will be nice for my golf game. Be safe.

Our week in Vermont

We spent a lovely week in the splendid green hills of Vermont. We didn't get a lot done unless you want to count reading, taking naps, a little golf, and visiting a cheese factory and a maple syrup factory. We also got out to eat one night but with Tippy's cooking I am always happy to eat at home.

The area was truly beautiful and we could only imagine how it would look in full fall colors. Our friends Mike & Patty and Jerry & Jackie will visit this same park after they leave Bangor, Maine in late September. The sights should be tremendous for them! The park pretty much emptied out after Monday, Labor Day, so we had lots of peace and quiet. We met some nice folks from New Hampshire that had the site next to us and they had an Alfa Gold 5th wheel. They were very kind and left us lots of wood for our campfire. We have invited them to the Alfa national Rally next April in Texas but they were not sure when I gave them the approximate dates.

We made two visits to the Cabot Cheese factory in Cabot, VT. They sell cheese all over the country and are one of the largest farm co-ops in the country. They have over 1500 members that contribute milk to the co-op. They make all kinds of cheese, mostly white, plus cottage cheese, yogurt, several types of butter, and many other speciality cheese items. An interesting cheese fact we learned on the tour was that cheese is normally white and only becomes yellow when coloring is added. back when England was in charge here they imposed a tax on all goods and they made the locals color their cheese so that it could be identified and taxed. So all yellow cheese is still artificially colored to this day.

On another day we traveled to St. Johnsbury, VT to visit a maple syrup factory. We had a tour of the factory and learned how they made the syrup and all of the maple candies that are so good and so sweet. We visited the gift store were we found some syrup, candy, a sweatshirt, and a few other items. They also had some candy samples and I hung around that area for quite a while.

We have been able to buy fresh sweet corn and tomatoes at roadside markets and have been in heaven with the wonderful tastes. There is nothing better than fresh produce, especially tomatoes and corn! I did travel to Barre, VT, about 25 miles from Danville, where I played the C.C. of Barre. This course advertises that is the "must play" course in Vermont and I must admit the layout was pretty special. The course wasn't in the best of condition - many tees were quite chewed up, but the greens were smooth and we had a good time. I joined up with a couple that has a summer home in Sugarbush, VT and their regular home is on the coast of New Hampshire. Their experience with the course really helped me know where to play even if I didn't always follow their directions.

So far we think Vermont is the prettiest of the New England states but we still have a few more to go. We put the Maine sticker on our map today, we arrived here yesterday, and now we have only 5 states to visit before completely filling the map. We will get 4 of the 5 on this trip leaving only North Dakota on the "to do list." We continue to have wonderful weather with pleasant days and cool evenings. We do a campfire almost every night and the heat from the fire feels real good. More later on our trip into Maine and our site at the Point Sebago Golf and Beach Resort. Enjoy the pics and be safe.
